Today Stuart Matlins turns 70.
20 years ago, he started in Woodstock (Vermont) his publishing house “Jewish Lights Publishing“ www.jewishlights.com. His intention was to help making Jewish ideas understood in the Christian world too..
For this he forfeited a promising career at the age of 34 years when he already was managing partner of the famous consulting firm Booz Allen.
I know, he could have been a prominent figure in the U.S. business community. Later, at the age of not quite forty, he even turned down the offer to become Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of the Budget in Washington. Now, before his 70th Birthday, he admits his (sometime) doubts whether his decision to leave New York 26 years ago, had been right: „I feel that I have paid a high price economically and in terms of national prominence … on the other hand: I realized years ago hat I would not have been able to establish and sustain a relationship with someone like my wife Antionette, or my children and I think, I would not have liked myself very much.“
But he can be proud and take pleasure in what he has achieved (together with his wife) in Woodstock, one of the most beautiful places in Vermont. He established a synagogue, being its spiritual leader for almost twenty years, bringing hundreds of adults and children back into the Jewish community. Among many other honorary positions, he has worked almost 20 years for the Board of Hebrew Union College aand the Jewish Reform seminary in the United States. And for years he organized the service for the small community of Jewish visitors during the Frankfurt Book Fair- mostly in an empty conference room – „You have to think then a cupboard for the Tora“ says Stuart.
For many years Stuart and his wife Antoinette (a popular jewelry expert and author) and myself have been close friends: Once a year, we meet during the Frankfurt Book Fair and talk about the past year, our joys, but also our problems. He – like myself – is still active, and reports: „Business is ok. Not as bad as last year. Not as good as before the economic crisis.“ I could have said the same about my business. And also that one: „Fortunately we are profitable and I think working hard, next year will be better.“
We once stayed at his guest house in the forest; I felt his deep yet liberal beliefs. The two held the Shabbat prayer with us and our children , and broke the bread and sung. That was an unforgettable moment for all of us and especially for our children.
He became a publisher by accident: His wife Antoinette had written the guidebook „GEMS & JEWELRY – The Buying Guide“ , which he wanted to publish himself. He had to persuade the original publisher, but eventually he bought back the rights and with this book he established Gemstonepress www.gemstonepress.com. The book is still a standard and led to numbers of other books on the subject. Later Gemstonepress became the nucleus of the sister publishing venture „Jewish Lights Publishing“.
I asked him what his „70th“ meant to him now? He answered: „It is a time when I think of other people, they are old, while I still feel young. Sometimes I think, however, it’s time to stop and simply relax and read and listen to music. And then there are these days that make me feel, I can still conquer worlds. Therefore, there will not a big celebration: The 70th Birthday is just another day on our journey“.
Stuart, I would like to accompany you and Antoinette still for a long time on this journey. I am proud having in you a friend with whom I can talk and laugh, despite our different faith.

Vor 20 Jahren hat der amerikanische Verleger in Woodstock (Vermont) den Verlag „Jewish Lights Publishing“ gegründet www.jewishlights.com – mit der Intention, durch sein Verlagsprogramm auch der christlichen Welt das jüdische Gedankengut verständlich zu machen.
Für diese Aufgabe hat er eine vielversprechende Karriere aufgegeben: Bereits im Alter von 34 Jahren war er Managing Partner der berühmten US-Beratungsfirma Booz Allen. Ich weiß, er hätte eine prominente Figur in der US-Wirtschaft werden können: Im Alter von noch nicht einmal vierzig Jahren hat er nämlich sogar das Angebot ausgeschlagen, Deputy Director im Wirtschaftsministerium in Washington zu werden – ich bin überzeugt: Er wäre landesweit berühmt geworden. Jetzt, vor seinem 70. Geburtstag, gibt er zu, dass er manchmal zweifelt, ob seine Entscheidung, vor 26 Jahren New York verlassen zu haben, richtig war und ob der Preis für sein neues Leben in Woodstock, auch aus ökonomischer Sicht, nicht zu hoch war.
Dabei kann er mit Stolz auf sein Wirken dort zurückblicken und jeden Tag den Erfolg seiner Arbeit in einem der schönsten Orte Vermonts miterleben und spüren: Matlins ist Mitbegründer und und war über zwanzig Jahre geistiger Führer der dortigen jüdischen Gemeinde, die sich in den Aufbaujahren nur in seinem Büro treffen konnte. Inzwischen gibt es dort durch seine Initiative eine Synagoge, in der sich (nach den kleinsten Anfängen) heute bis zu 200 Gläubige treffen. Neben vielen anderen Ehrenämtern gehört er seit 20 Jahren auch zum Vorstand des Hebrew Union College, dem jüdischen Reform-Priesterseminar in den USA. Und über viele Jahre organisierte er während der Buchmesse in Frankfurt den Gottesdienst für die kleine Gemeinde der jüdischen Messebesucher – meistens in einem nüchternen Konferenzraum – „den Toraschrank muss man sich dann denken“, sagt Stuart.
Seit vielen Jahren bin ich mit Stuart und seiner Frau Antoinette (einer gefragten Schmuck-Expertin und Buchautorin) befreundet: Wir treffen uns jedes Jahr einmal während Buchmesse und erzählen uns über unser Jahr, über unsere Freuden, aber auch unsere Probleme. Er ist – wie ich – nach wie vor aktiv und berichtet: „Business is o.k. Not as bad as last year. Not as good as it was before the economic crisis.“ Ein Satz, der auch von mir sein könnte, wenn ich besser English spräche, wie auch der: „Fortunately we are profitable and I think working hard and smart. Next year will be better.”
Wir haben schon in seinem Gästehaus im Wald wohnen dürfen; ich habe seine tiefe und dabei liberale Gläubigkeit erfahren. Die beiden haben mit uns und unseren Kindern das Schabbat-Gebet gesprochen und vor uns das Brot gebrochen und gesungen. Das war ein auch unseren Kindern unvergessener Moment.
Zur Verlegerei ist er durch Zufall gekommen: Seine Frau Antoinette hatte den Ratgeber „JEWELRY & GEMS – The Buying Guide“ geschrieben. Er kaufte die Rechte zurück und gründete mit diesem Buch den Verlag Gemstonepress www.gemstonepress.com. Das Buch ist heute nicht nur ein Standardwerk, sondern hat auch eine ganze Reihe weiterer Bücher zum Thema angeregt, wurde dann Keimzelle für den Schwesterverlag Jewish Lights.
Ich habe ihn gefragt, was ihm die „70“ jetzt bedeutet? Er sagt: „Es ist eine Zeit, in der ich von anderen Menschen denke, sie sind alt, während ich mich immer noch jung fühle. Manchmal denke ich allerdings, es an der Zeit aufzuhören und einfach nur zu entspannen und zu lesen und Musik zu hören. Und dann gibt es diese Tage, die mir das Gefühl geben, ich kann immer noch Welten erobern. Deswegen gibt es auch kein großes Fest: Der 70. Geburtstag ist nur ein weiterer Tag auf unserer Reise“.
Stuart, ich möchte Antoinette und Dich noch lange auf dieser Reise begleiten. Ich bin stolz, in Dir einen Freund zu haben, mit dem ich trotz unserer Glaubensunterschiede über alles reden und lachen kann.
