buchmarkt.de: Bitte beschreiben Sie uns Ihren Verlag …
Polirom Publishing House is one of the Romanian after-Revolution miracles: they started in 1995, by publishing one book, called „For Europe“. In 2008, we publish 700 new titles, in more than 70 collections, ranging from self-help to Robert Musil’s Man without qualities. The company started in Iasi, the northern part of the country (another „miracle“, being known that the center is more suitable for doing business) and now it has four major headquarters, one of them being in Bucharest, the one that I manage. It’s profile is covering most of the Romanian reader’s interest, starting with text-books, and ending with chick-lit. For the last 4 years, Polirom has been the company with the highest profit and the highest turn-over in the country. But I joined this PH only for it’s universal literature collection, Biblioteca Polirom, which I manage nowadays, along with three more commercial collections.
Looking at my country’s book market is a very difficult task, as we have no market study. The last known such thing was done in 2000 and we understood from that that more than 200 active PH’s (more than 10 books/year) are struggling to attract 1.000.000 million readers. If you add to that no suitable bookshops, no booksellers (the ones we have could also sale potatoes, it would be much the same), no national coverage of the distribution, the nationalist way of reading (communist heritage), you could understand that why publishing is a difficult job today in Romania. Nevertheless, we do publish a little bit less than Penguin…
Last year’s visit to UK was a revelation to me, in terms of understanding „the real publishing business“. I expect the same from a different market, but a one closer to mine. FBF is always a challenge. This year I expect to even my record from last year, which is „getting the Nobel“ for the second year in a row. If not, I will be satisfied with the best deal of the fair.
