PAOLINI’S #1 BESTSELLING ‘BRISINGR’ NOW IPHONE READER-READY FROM RANDOM HOUSE, INC.

Publisher Offers Two Dozen-Plus Titles As IPhone & ITouch Applications

(New York, December 22, 2008)—This fall’s #1 worldwide bestseller, BRISINGR by Christopher Paolini, can now be purchased directly for reading on the screen of an iPhone and iPod Touch. The novel is among the more than two dozen adult and children’s fiction and non-fiction titles Random House, Inc., the world’s largest physical and e-book trade publisher, is now and soon will be making available for sale as applications for the two handheld devices through the Apple App store. Among the other titles are Paolini’s previous two #1 novels in his Inheritance cycle, ERAGON and ELDEST; the celebrated HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy by Philip Pullman, which includes THE GOLDEN COMPASS; PERSUADER by #1 bestselling novelist Lee Child, and the 2008 Fiction National Book Award winner, SHADOW COUNTRY by Peter Mathiessen.

To bring these titles to the iPhone and to iTouch through the App store, Random House has partnered with ScrollMotion, a New York content-technology company who has created versions of the books for their Iceberg reading application. Iceberg offers consumers a user-friendly e-book experience for portable devices, providing true pagination and „textured“ on-screen pages that look like an actual book. In addition, Iceberg makes full use of the unique capabilities of the iPhone and iPod Touch by allowing readers to use their fingers to scroll down the page, flip through pages of the book, and pinch to resize the text. E-books available as Iceberg Apps may be purchased and downloaded wirelessly directly to the device. In addition, consumers will be able to simultaneously listen to music and read e-books.

Matt Shatz, Vice President, Digital for Random House Inc. said, “The iPhone and iPod Touch present exciting and fun ways for people to access some great Random House reading. With this valued collaboration with Scroll Motion, we are pleased to be making this initial list of outstanding books by some of our top-selling authors available to a ground-breaking group of readers.“

“We are thrilled to introduce the brand-new Iceberg Reader, which provides a unique e-reading experience that captures the true essence and joys of reading,” said Josh Koppel, Chief Creative Officer of ScrollMotion. “We are constantly developing new ways to enjoy content in this new medium, and are delighted to work with Random House, and its amazing list of writers, to provide consumers with an application designed to enhance their digital- reading experience.”

Last month, Random House announced the expansion of its industry-leading e-books catalogue by some 6,000 titles, bringing its total number of e-books available online by mid-2009 to more than 15,000. Earlier in December, the Random House Publishing Group, a division of Random House, Inc., released nine free backlist titles and related frontlist excerpts via the Stanza Reader, also available in the App store.
